BENEFITS OF VASER® LIPOSUCTION

Liposuction remains one of the most popular cosmetic procedures, and was one of the top 5 procedures nationally. There’s no denying the benefits that can be gained through liposuction. The fine effects of body sculpting are the perfect complement to a healthful diet and active lifestyle to bring out the best in your body. However, not all liposuction techniques are created equal. Mr Uppal believes that VASER® liposuction, or LipoSelection®, delivers the best results and the best patient experience in suitable patients.

UNDERSTANDING LIPOSUCTION

The process of liposuction involves removing fat cells with a special hollow tube called a cannula. A laser or ultrasound are used to melt the fat bedtime sucking it out. While dieting and exercise are the healthiest methods for weight loss, practicing a positive lifestyle may not be enough by itself to give your body quite the right shape. Stubborn fat deposits often remain behind, especially in areas that are hard to target with a workout alone, like the thighs or love handles. If you do put on weight in the future it doesn’t settle in the previous areas, but is distributed evenly across the body.

Liposuction helps minimise problem spots when other methods can’t help, or fatty areas that have appeared as the body has changed shape with age. Popular treatment areas include the love handles, muffin top and abdomen, inner thighs, upper arms, back, and even the face and neck. Lipo can be combined with other procedures to deliver more comprehensive results, like fine-tuning to complement a tummy tuck or facelift. Men often choose lipo in the chest area to reveal the firmer musculature below, enhancing the results of their normal exercise routine.

WHAT MAKES VASER® DIFFERENT?

There are several methods that Mr Uppal may use when performing liposuction. VASER® liposuction uses ultrasonic waves to melt fat cells, facilitating their removal. While other forms of liposuction also break up fat cells for removal, the methods are different. Tumescent lipo involves an injection of liquid solution to promote fat cell removal, while laser-assist liposuction utilizes light energy for liquefying fat. While all are effective, we’ve seen clear benefits to using VASER® instead.

With traditional tumescent liposuction, the injection of liquid solution alone isn’t enough to fully break fat cells apart enough for removal. This form of lipo often has to be accompanied with a vigorous motion, using the cannula to physically break up and withdraw fatty deposits. This method may result in bruising, and can harm surrounding tissue. If blood vessels are damaged, excess bleeding can occur.

LASER assisted liposuction is also successful in removing more stubborn fat deposits. Although it runs the risk of skin burns in the hands of a less experienced surgeon, Mr Uppal has many happy patients and many years of experience in this technique. He trains junior surgeons in the use of Laser liposuction and has a dedicated team for this procedure.

The use of ultrasound energy utilized by the VASER® is highly specific for emulsifying fatty tissue. This means surrounding areas are at a lower risk of injury, plus facilitates easier removal of fat deposits in more fibrous areas like the back. The preservation of blood vessels maintains generous blood supply to the treated area, and promotes healing. Using VASER® also minimizes the incidence of post-surgical bruising, soreness or discomfort. In general, we find that VASER® delivers a greater capacity for fine body sculpting as compared to other liposuction methods.

MINOR PROCEDURE FOR A MAJOR DIFFERENCE

Regardless of which type of liposuction you feel is best for you, remember that the tool is only as good as your surgeon. While the popularity of liposuction in the UK makes it easy to think of lipo as a minor cosmetic surgery, the best results are achieved by those practitioners who have an advanced understanding of the dimensionality of human anatomy and plenty of experience with body sculpting. Talk to Mr Uppal to get advice on what is best for you.

Surgical Liposuction, is a procedure designed to eliminate unwanted bulges of fat from different areas of the body. It is the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedure in the UK. When performed by a qualified surgeon, liposuction is very safe and results in short recovery times. Good body shape can be achieved with exercise but some areas such as the thighs, tummy, buttocks and arms can be difficult to improve. Liposuction and LipoSculpture can transform the appearance of these areas and allow patients to feel confident about their bodies. It also allows greater freedom in choosing what to wear as well as when on the beach or pool.

Who is a good candidate for liposuction?

There are certain areas on the body where ‘slow burning’ fat is stored, areas which will vary from person to person. The particular shape of the figure, be it an ‘hourglass’ or ‘pear’ shape, is often defined by these slow burning fat bulges. Unfortunately, they can be very hard to get rid of and, even with diet and exercise, weight loss is most likely to occur in other areas of the body first.

The good news is that liposuction can specifically target these stubborn areas of fat. By eliminating or reducing the fat producing cells in these areas, fat is stored in other areas and the contour of the body is thus changed.

Women often find that certain areas of the body are disproportionate to the rest of the body, areas like the thighs, hips, or abdomen for instance. With liposuction, the surgeon can targets these specific areas and literally sculpt the body, creating a more attractive shape. Liposuction may be combined with other procedures to obtain the best results. Because muscle tone and skin tone are not affected byliposuction, patients with hanging skin may be better candidates for formal fat excision.

Liposuction performed on small areas often requires just local anaesthesia as a day case while more extensive areas may require general anaesthesia. Most patients go home the same day and recovery take 1 – 2 days. There may be some swelling and bruising which settles over the next week. We will provide you with a garment to wear to help get the best results.

Which areas are good for liposuction?

The ideal person for liposuction is someone who has areas of fat on the body that will not shift with exercise. The most common areas for liposuction are the tummy and thighs in women and tummy and chest for men.
The inner thighs also bother a lot of women and they are unhappy that the thighs rub. Liposuction can help this also. It is a simple and safe procedure to remove fat permanently.

What happens if I gain weight after liposuction?

The fat does not return to the areas that have had liposuction. If you put on weight it is spread evenly across the body. This is a great advantage of liposuction and ensures good long term results. This does depend on a heathy lifestyle of course.

Do Vaser-Lipo and other types of Laser liposuction actually work?

The short answer is Yes.

VaserLipo uses ultrasound to melt the fat and can be performed under local anaesthetic or a light general anaesthetic so you can go home the same day. You will be recovered by the next day and can work also. You will be tender in the areas that have had fat removed but this improves over a week. There is also bruising in these areas which settles after about 2 weeks.
LaserLipo is for more stubborn fat and is very effective in reducing these areas as well as tightening the skin. This is good for young patients who are active in day to day life but can’t shift certain areas even with exercise or dieting. The tummy area and thighs are the most common areas.
Surgical liposuction works the best and is for more extensive areas. Ask Mr Uppal to see which will work best for you.

What is the recovery time after liposuction?

Most patients go home on the same day of liposuction and recovery takes anything from 3 days to a week depending on the number of areas having liposuction. You can return to work within a week usually and exercise after 2 weeks or when you feel ready. You can drive after 1 week.

What are the risks of Liposuction?

Liposuction is a safe procedure that takes about half an hour per area. It can be done under sedation or with you asleep. There are tiny scars where the cannula is inserted to suck out the fat. All patients get bruising and swelling which lasts about 1-2 weeks. The final result appears after 6 months as long as you wear the special compression garments we give you.

Can liposuction remove any extra skin that has stretched due to putting on weight?

No. Liposuction is done in a special way by Mr Uppal to remove as much fat as possible and to help shrink the skin that is left over. But if there is significant extra skin, then not all of it will shrink down. A fullness or wrinkling can occur if there is a lot of extra skin -for example in the tummy area. This will need to be treated with a mini tummy tuck to remove the extra skin and get a flat tummy.
