Over the years, factors such as pregnancy, breast feeding and the force of gravity take their toll on a woman’s breasts. As the skin loses its elasticity, the breasts often lose their shape and firmness and begin to sag. Breastlift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts–at least, for a time. (No surgery can permanently delay the effects of gravity.) Mastopexy can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. If your breasts are small or have lost volume–for example, after pregnancy–breast implants inserted in conjunction with mastopexy can increase both their firmness and their size. Please be sure to ask Mr Uppal if there is anything about the procedure you don’t understand.
The best candidates for breast lift
A breast lift can enhance your appearance and your self-confidence, but it won’t necessarily change your looks to match your ideal, or cause other people to treat you differently. Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with your surgeon.
The best candidates for mastopexy are healthy, emotionally-stable women who are realistic about what the surgery can accomplish. The best results are usually achieved in women with small, sagging breasts. Breasts of any size can be lifted, but the results may not last as long in heavy breasts.
Many women seek mastopexy because pregnancy and breast feeding have left them with stretched skin and less volume in their breasts. Mr Uppal will discuss your particular wishes and requirements and offer you surgery to give your breasts a more youthful and firm appearance. If you are also have breast enhancement surgery at the same time, your surgeon will place an implant behind each breast, inserting it either under your breast tissue or behind the muscle on which the breast lies. The implants themselves may be round or teardrop shaped depending on which design your surgeon feels is best for you.
Before Surgery
During your initial consultation, your surgeon will evaluate your health and explain the surgical technique he feels will be best for you based on your breasts and skin tone. If your breasts are sagging, he may also advise on which type of uplift procedure will be best suited for you. Your initial consultation is also the time for you to discuss the results you are looking for, including how much larger you would like your breasts to be if you are having breast implants at the same time. This is an issue you want to think through carefully as a large augmentation won’t look natural and may cause rippling of the skin in the sides of the breast. It’s very important that you be totally frank with your surgeon about your expectations and the goals you want to achieve – and equally important that your surgeon be frank with you about your alternatives and the plusses and minuses of each.
After Surgery
You should expect some discomfort during the first one or two days after your surgery , especially when you move around or cough. However you’ll be up and about within 24 hours. You’ll be most comfortable if you continue wearing a sports bra like the one you were fitted with after your surgery around the clock for the first two or three weeks as your bruising subsides. Surgical drains are not used, so there are none to be removed and as your stitches are dissolvable they will not need removal either. Should a small amount of stitch be visible it may be cut short or simply left in place until it dissolves. You will go home the same day if you wish. You can also shower the next day as the dressings are waterproof.
