Moles
As a person grows older and is exposed to sunlight, the skin changes. Most people have some skin marks which are entirely normal, such as freckles and moles. Some marks however may change or darken over time. Though seldom life threatening, skin disorders need to be assessed by a skin specialist.
Mr Uppal works closely with dermatologists and regularly sees moles and skin conditions in his NHS practice. He can treat benign sun spots, age spots and broken capillaries by Laser. He will however look for moles that are asymmetric in colour, have an irregular border, are darker than the rest or have multiple colours. As Mr Uppal looks at moles every day, he is more likely to pick up abnormal moles. Following a consultation and close examination, he may recommend that some moles require removal with a minor procedure called a biopsy, under local anaesthetic. All specimens are sent to the Pathology laboratory for microscopic examination. This provides a definite diagnosis and can reduce psychological stress.
We recommend you wear sun protection at all times on holiday and use a daily sunscreen. Annual mole examinations are recommended for most individuals, but more frequent checks should be done if you have a history of skin cancer. Please see your GP or call us for a consultation of you have any concerns.
