Mr Uppal was born in Hillingdon, Middlesex and grew up around Berkshire. He went to medical school at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, London. At medical school he was an active member of the Rowing team and Tennis club. He participated in many competitions and one year undertook a sponsored four-day row from Oxford to London. He also represented the college tennis team in Trinity College, Dublin. He qualified in Medicine and Surgery in 1993 and was awarded a Prize in Pharmacology at his final examinations at the University of London.

He became a Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons in 1998 following completion of his junior surgical training. He went on to pursue his interest in research and undertook a clinical trial of a new medicine that improved wound healing. He was awarded a Master of Science (MSc) degree at University College London for this thesis in 1999. His work was published in medical journals in the United States.

Mr Uppal has worked in teaching hospitals in London including Guys and St Thomas' Hospital, St Bartholomew's Hospital and St George's Hospital. He has been fortunate to work with many leading surgeons in the UK and Europe. He was made a Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons in Plastic Surgery FRCS(Plast) as a result of his experience and work.

International Experience

Mr Uppal has spent three months living and working in Belgium to further specialise in his sub specialty interest of Breast Cancer Reconstruction. He has travelled to meetings in France, Belgium, Italy and the US to keep up to date with the latest techniques and continues to do so.

Lectures

Mr Uppal is a regular lecturer at the Royal College of Radiologists in Sentinel node biopsy for malignant melanoma. He helped to develop a new technique using ultrasound measurement of node depth for patients with melanoma. He has published this technique in the European Journal of Plastic Surgery. He also lectures at the Hellenic Centre and Thames Valley University.

NHS Consultant Appointment

Heatherwood and Wexham NHS Trust

The trust has a catchment area of almost a million people around the Windsor, Ascot, Slough and Reading area. In the NHS, Mr Uppal treats common skin cancers, breast conditions, birth defects, burns, road accidents and performs breast reconstruction, hand surgery and microsurgery. The standards required to become a Consultant in the NHS are extremely high. Some plastic surgeons only perform cosmetic surgery and do not provide the wide range of operations required of an NHS consultant.
